 Terry Anderson’s Pastel Artwork

For me, pastel drawing is a lifelong process, a journey without an end.

I am a cat-loving, color blind, self-taught artist who began using pastels 32 years ago in order to put form on and externalize inner images to try to illuminate early feeling-states in an attempt to better understand and overcome early experiences. Thus, much of the work is a reflection of the unconscious made conscious, portals to the soul, a personal exploration.

Many are metaphors, symbols of affective experiences, and of dreamlife. Some are the relation of a worldview, others simply recurring images that insisted on the light.

Once, long ago, in the years of my childhood, which have flashed irretrievably by, it was a joy for me to lie in bed at night and contemplate (initiated by my nightly whisper of the Lord's Prayer), the idea of endlessness (the forever and forever part). It inspired AWE in me, and it was the first experience I had of feeling a tiny part of something much, much greater than myself and I believe that these nightly reveries stimulated and created an opening in me of so much that was curious to the insatiable mind of that child.

As an adult, I am deeply interested in the human condition, and the exploration of what's it's like to be human. We are doomed as individuals to be separate, yet prewired from the womb to yearn for and seek connection with others.

These connections and the failures to connect that occur throughout one's life, generate emotions that, coupled with the individual's reaction to them, help shape us into the unique individuals that we are. My paintings are often tableau, or merely snapshots of these reactions, at times my own, and their aftermath.

Some are comments on our shared humanity, and depict a small sample of the joys and sufferings we all encounter in varying proportions. These experiences are inextricably woven into one's being, influencing how we encounter the world, present ourselves to it, and how it feels to undertake the awesome and wondrous journey we call life. The paintings reflect a portion of my journey. Perhaps some might resonate with a part of yours as well.

There is also a relatively new page, Moments, which portrays in written form experiences that seem better suited to words rather than pastels.

"A virtue he said, is to keep alive the memory of whatever has affected him, and whose only way to say thank you for a lifetime sense of wonder at the mystery and beauty of being, was by this act of magical creation, and of storing in his soul whatever he has loved." (Unknown)

"All art is at its core an articulation of a single impulse: to affirm life's timeless and fractured beauty in the face of mortality." (Unknown)

"A painting is nothing but a bridge between the soul of the artist and that of the spectator." Eugene Delacroix

"We need something more than just photographs of nature. Nor should we content ourselves with painting pretty pictures to hang on sitting room walls. Let us try and see, even though we ourselves may not succeed. ...A style of art that will fire man's imagination. An art that springs from our very hearts. " Edvard Munch

"My role in society, or any artist or poet's role, is to try to express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all." John Lennon

"On the Seashore of Endless Worlds Children Play" Tagore

"Art enables us to find and lose ourselves at the same time."  Thomas Merton

"The element of tragedy which lies in the fact of frequency, has not yet wrought itself into the coarse emotion of mankind; and perhaps our frames could hardly bear much of it. If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence." George Eliot

"The mystery of Life is not a problem to be solved but a reality to be experienced." Alan Watts

“For there are ‘made’ laws, ‘discovered ‘ laws, but also laws----a truth for all time. These are more or less hidden in the reality which surrounds us and do not change. Not only science but art also shows us that reality, at first incomprehensible, gradually reveals itself, by the mutual relations that are inherent in things.” Piet Mondrian

“How do you know but ev'ry Bird
that cuts the airy way
Is an immense world of delight
clos'd by your senses five?”
William Blake

“In the evening of life we will be judged by Love alone”
